Your Monster is Caroline Lindy's feature debut and described as “based on a true-ish story”. The horrors inspiring the story were none other than the director's personal experience with cancer. Now this might sound like a devastating premise for a film, but to best describe Your Monster I'd like to quote Cody Allen in InSession Film: “A romantic-comedy-horror film about falling in love with your inner rage.”
For a viewer who gets terribly frightened by your run-of-the-mill horror flicks, and who is not especially enthused by musicals, Your Monster is oddly enough a perfect fit. It's hands down the most adorable “horror” movie I've ever seen, and the musical portions are not overwhelming or out of place, but part of the story in a necessary way. The genre-mashup offers a unique way for the main character to find herself, her voice and to tap into her inner rage in an unapologetic manner with some of the best emotional support a girl could ask for.
Your Monster will have you fuming with anger and roaring with laughter, while tugging at your heartstrings, so do not miss this opportunity to watch it on the big screen.
