Ten thousand years in the future, the remnants of humanity live in small communities scattered across a post-apocalyptic wasteland, wary of the monsters with whom they share the night. D, a dhampir—half human, half vampire—also known as Vampire Hunter D, traverses the frontier in search of Vampire Nobility. When a young woman is kidnapped by a Noble, D is hired to find and save her, even if that means driving a stake through her heart.
Renowned as a cult classic of Japanese animation, the recently remastered Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is an amalgamation of gothic science fiction and the spaghetti western. Its visual style is akin to stepping inside a baroque painting influenced by European vampire literature, the American frontier, and Yoshitaka Amano’s illustrations. Through sparse dialogue, the film purposefully wields its striking visual style and enthralling sound design to convey its story to the audience. The English-language version had a limited theatrical run in the US, while the Japanese translation screened in Japan with Japanese subtitles only. Trondheim Filmklubb excitedly presents a unique opportunity to experience the first fully-remastered version of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, in Japanese with English subtitles, on the big screen—but beware the vampire’s alluring gaze, or you may very well find yourself whisked away by a mysterious, cloaked stranger galloping into the night on a cyborg horse!
