After an oil well catches fire, 4 men, whose troubled pasts have stranded them in poverty and isolation in the jungles of South America, agree to drive cases of dynamite across treacherous mountainous terrain in a desperate hope to escape their miserable circumstances. The dynamite is old and extremely unstable, sweating nitroglycerin in the humid jungle heat. The trucks are lumbering rusty beasts of burden, ready to break down at any moment. The men distrust one another, but must reluctantly find a way to work together if they want to make it to the burning well and a second chance at life.
Partially a remake of the 1953 film The Wages of Fear and more so a new adaptation of the book of the same name, Sorcerer is William Friedkin’s overlooked masterpiece, a brutal and tense thriller about desperate men forced into a desperate situation, rendered with Friedkin’s signature documentarian style and jaw-dropping practical effects. Recently remastered, this is a film made for the big screen!
