Irish Folklore Trilogy

25. april 15:00-22:00

Sted: Cinemateket Trondheim

Trondheim Filmklubb is thrilled to present our marathon screening of Cartoon Saloon’s highly acclaimed Irish Folklore Trilogy!

Magic, folklore, Irish history, and Celtic mythology are brought to life in these breathtakingly beautiful, yet criminally overlooked, animated films. The Irish Folklore Trilogy includes The Secret of Kells (2009, dir. Tomm Moore & Nora Twomey), Song of the Sea (2014, dir. Tomm Moore), and Wolfwalkers (2020, dir. Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart).

The beloved trilogy has been lauded for its storytelling and unique animation inspired by Celtic mythology and Irish folklore, but this vision was not as clearly defined in the studio’s early years. The Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon sought to explore the ways hand-drawn animation might re-invent and re-imagine itself, and the inspiration behind the enthralling animation we have come to associate with this trilogy came during the early development stages of The Secret of Kells. Director Tomm Moore was inspired by how the 1993 film The Thief and the Cobbler implemented Persian art, and decided to attempt something similar with Irish art. They turned to the ‘Book of Kells’, whose traditional Celtic artwork and history directly inspired The Secret of Kells – but were also inspired by stained glass designs, Gustav Klimt paintings, and impressionist artworks. This became the blueprint for later films.

Each film follows two children – one from the mundane, modern world and the other from the magical world – who must, sometimes reluctantly, journey together into the unknown: In The Secret of Kells, a young monk’s life is forever changed when he learns the secrets of the Book of Kells; Song of the Sea follows a brother and his little sister, the last Seal-Child, who go on an adventure to save the spirit world and find their home; and, finally, Wolfwalkers delves into the unlikely and beautiful friendship developing between a young apprentice huntress and a free-spirited wolf-girl.

The Irish Folklore Trilogy is a celebration of Irish heritage: history is told through the lens of folklore and mythology, accompanied by visually stunning animation, an otherworldly score and wonderful character designs. These culturally rich films bring old stories to a new audience, which in turn connect us to the past.

Trondheim Filmklubb invites you to experience these magical worlds with us on Saturday 25. April, at Cinemateket Trondheim.
