In addition to our screening of The Thing, Trondheim Filmklubb and Austmann Brewery & Tap Room are about to double down, bringing you another iconic, action-packed Christmas classic: Die Hard.
Forty stories above Los Angeles on Christmas Eve, weary NYPD detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) must fend off a terrorist cell—headed by the ruthless Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman)—who have taken over Nakatomi Plaza. With little help from local authorities, McClane must single-handedly attempt to outsmart the terrorists and save the hostages, including his estranged wife. The odds are against him, but that’s just the way he likes it.
Expectations for the film were low, with studios unsure of the bankability of its lead, Willis, then known primarily for his work on television. In fact, marketing materials often omitted the actor’s likeness entirely, determining that the film’s setting was as important as its star. Despite initially mixed reviews, Die Hard became a massive hit, spawning several sequels, revitalizing the action film genre, and permanently entering the zeitgeist. While its merits as a Christmas film may be disputed, its status as one of the greatest action films of all time is beyond debate.
