High school is rough for nerdy senior Arnie Cunningham; he feels lost and lonely, he can’t get a girlfriend, his bullies are violent psychopaths, and his parents are cold and overbearing. But when he discovers a dilapidated 1958 Plymouth Fury for sale in a creepy guy’s yard, everything changes. He is told the car’s name is Christine.
As he fixes her up, the connection only grows stronger; Arnie begins acting differently, dressing differently, the blood-red car now a symbol of his newfound confidence and independence. His friend Dennis is worried that there might be something wrong with Christine though, but Arnie won’t hear it: “Whoa, whoa. You better watch what you say about my car. She's real sensitive.”
Christine perfectly blends Stephen King’s unique creativity with John Carpenter’s succinct and sharp directorial sensibilities, and the result is an entertaining and surprisingly emotionally resonant film that manages to make the titular car feel like a real and tangible character. This is as much a tragic love story as it is a fun and campy horror movie, and it balances its tone perfectly, making us immediately forget the film’s inherently silly premise. Christine uses impressive practical effects with reverse photography to bring to life the car’s ability to crush its victims and mend itself, and all of it is elevated by Carpenter’s signature score. This film was made for the big screen, especially in its new remastered format, and we’re proud to start our fall semester with this early 80s popcorn-gem!
