Hearts of Darkness (1991)

In the late 1970s, as renegade filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola struggles to complete an epic allegory of the Vietnam War, his wife, Eleanor, films his daily travails with a camera of her own. Based on her footage, Hearts Of Darkness (1991) details the difficulties of the large production—from weather-related delays in the Philippines to star Martin Sheen’s near-fatal heart attack while filming—and provides unprecedented access behind the scenes of one of Hollywood's most acclaimed films. Initially slated as a sixteen-week shoot, the making of Apocalypse Now (1979) would grow to mirror the film itself, and produce a million feet of film stock in the process. As Coppola himself put it, “We were in the jungle, there were too many of us, we had access to too much money, too much equipment, and little by little we went insane.” Much more than a footnote to the rightly praised Apocalypse Now, Hearts Of Darkness captures a unique insight into the creative process of one of cinema’s most revered directors, at the height of his powers, navigating the fine line between art and commerce without sacrificing himself or his dignity.
